About the Foundation

The Vidya Jyoti Foundation is a grass root level organization, established in the year 2014 with the leadership of Mrs. Shakuntala Mahanta and four like-minded social workers from Keonjhar district. The objectives include imparting quality and value-based education to children from deprived communities, providing basic health facilities in remote tribal villages of Keonjhar, protecting and regenerating natural resources by indigenous tribal communities, strengthening traditional institutions, and reviving indigenous climate-resilient agricultural practices through community-led processes. ODISHA BIGRADE SCHOOL, Keonjhar, is one wing of the foundation aimed at promoting value-based education for children aged 4 to 15 years. It was started in the academic year 2015.


School Structure:


⮚ The academic year at our school runs from March 1st to April 30th of the following year. Currently, we have a total of 251 students enrolled, consisting of 136 boys and 115 girls. Our school offers classes from Nursery through to Class VIII. We also provide hostel facilities for both boys and girls within the school premises, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students.

⮚ In addition to our strong academic program, we emphasize extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and music, to foster well-rounded development. Our dedicated faculty is committed to nurturing each child's potential and creating a vibrant learning community.

Short description about the school .

With an objective to introduce a revolutionary chapter with the introduction of value based and nature-based education the active initiative of the foundation Odisha Bigrade school was started in the year 2019 at Naranpur with a student strength of 15. The school has got the NOC from Govt authority bearing COR No :DEO/KJR/005/2019-20 and provide 25% reservation of seats for the BPL category children as per RTE-2009.

Target Community:


The foundation works with men, women and children of deprived communities like Juang, Bhuyan, Ho, Santal, Sabar, Gand etc and Dalits community with more focus on vulnerable Juanga& Paudi Bhuyan community of Keonjhar District presently .

The deprived communities especiallythe ST, SC and other poorest section of the society including women and children shall live in a society where there shall be fulfillment of basic humanneeds, better education facilities for the children & youths,community’s authority over natural resources, gender equality, and cultural independence, healthy environment, and active community participation.

- Protection of the rights of the children especially the children need special care and protection.

Our Achievements

- Organize awareness building GP/Block/District level training of PRI/AWC/SHG/SMC members/Parents on RTE,2009 in 3 Blocks of Keonjhar district namely Ghatagaon, Sadar & Jhumpura block.

- Organize Cataract operations camps & Eye health checkup camps to decline blindness.

- Organize Community plantation & Plant distribution programmes with regular monitoring by the community partners.
